A pub in Wiltshire is facing a costly repair bill after flooding and a fire tore through its bar.

The Long Arms in the village of South Wraxall was affected by a burst drain earlier in the month and had to replace its ruined carpet, but then things took a turn for the worse after a damaged fuse board caught fire at the rear of the venue, devastating the smokehouse.

Landlord Rob Allcock told ThisisWiltshire.co.uk that the two incidents have put the pub in a difficult position ahead of the festive season.

"The amount of Christmas trade we have turned away is incredible," he said.

"We've had to cancel all our bookings and parties and throw out all our restaurant stock. We don't know how long we'll be without power. We just have to be confident we can get back up and running again."

As well as replacing the consumer unit, the pub still needs to have work carried out on its electrical system and could remain shut for weeks to come, the web source reported.

Meanwhile, Cornwall Council has been advising residents on how to deal with the aftermath of a flood, as large parts of the UK have been struck by a deluge of rainwater in the past few days.

It recommends turning off the home's electricity supply at the mains if it is safe to do so - but under no circumstances attempt to switch it off while standing in water in case you get a shock.

Householders should also ensure they, their family and pets are all out of the water, even if that means temporarily camping out upstairs. Once the property has been emptied of all standing water, electrical circuits must be checked by a qualified professional before they are turned back on, because damaged fuse boards - as in the case of the Long Arms - can represent a fire risk.
