Choosing the right alarm system

Choosing the right alarm system

Choosing the right alarm system

Statistics have shown a decrease in certain types of crime throughout the United States. Although that being said, some areas around certain neighbourhoods have seen an increase in burglaries over the past number of years.

Householders may install a security system which sounds an ear-piercing alarm if intruders have gained access onto their premises. Although this can save you money as there are no monitoring fees, it is important to note that if a false alarm is reported police departments may charge considerable fees for a call out.  You may also have to rely on your neighbours to report the incident if you are not at home.

There is a vast array of security equipment available depending on your budget.  The following are a few examples;

-          Central Control Unit with a battery back up, keypad and siren.

-          Smoke/Fire/Carbon Monoxide alarms

-          Pressure mats, which are generally placed under rugs

-          Motion detectors, which can sense changes in a room when a human is present.

-          Panic buttons – often placed in strategic locations

-          CCTV (Closed Circuit TV System), to allow for monitoring and recording of your premises

-          Water detectors to detect any basement leaks

-          Temperature gauges which willdetect if a furnace is broke

-          Mag lock (Magnetic Doors) and window contacts, which are energised when an alarm is activated. Should the circuit be broke, the alarm is sounded

Most homeowners and tenants, depending on the equipment types they have installed, will receive a home insurance discount ranging anywhere from 2% and 20%. If you are unable to afford an alarm system, there are several inexpensive ways to ensure security in your house. These include installing good quality window locks and deadbolts on doors, using light timers when leaving the house and adding outdoor PIR motion sensor lighting.
